It’s always a tricky one, guys are hard to buy for, and it’s even more difficult when it’s a landmark Birthday like a 40th.

Well, I got one present that was bang on the money for me. Match Ball Sponsor at Tranmere Rovers Football Club.

Confused? Let me explain…

Tranmere are my team. They may not be a team you know much about, but I’m an old fashioned football fan and it’s my belief that you should always support your local team. It’s where you’re from that counts, and the local club is an important part of the community spirit. Tranmere Rovers are a professional club, the club closest to where I was born, and were in the League Cup Final only 15 years ago when we were also banging on the door of the Premier League. Since then we have unfortunately slipped to our lowest ever league status in our 130 year history and find ourselves in The National League, but I still go to games, even if those games have changed from Forest, Leeds and Wolves, to the less salubrious surroundings of Welling, Dover and Braintree.

Match ball Sponsor? Well, at a football match there are a number of sponsorship opportunities. It’s usually local companies that take these packages as an opportunity to entertain their clients before the match itself, whilst getting some advertising space in the match programme and surroundings.

For Tranmere Rovers versus Cheltenham Town on Saturday 20th February 2016 though, it was no local company, it’s was me, Paul Weedon, enjoying his 40th Birthday gift from, and with, my Mum and my wife.

We got extremely well looked after with a 3 course meal, a multitude of mentions in the programme and on the score board, a chance to present the match ball on the pitch before the start of the game, and a signed ball post match from the Man Of The Match, and you know what, I LOVED it. It was one of those days when I felt like a 12 year old kid again, all wide eyed with wonderment.

As much as people may mock my football team I take pride in my loyalty to my club, and I know that no other club in the country could have given us the genuine heartfelt care and attention that we received last week. Thank you Tranmere Rovers; you provided proof that a 40 year old Birthday present for a man can be something really special.
