When I went to the World Cup in South Africa in 2010 everyone told me that it would be dangerous with serious potential unrest within the country. In general, everyone insisted it would be a disaster.

When I decided to go to the World Cup in Brasil this year everyone told me that it would be dangerous with serious potential unrest within the country. In general, everyone insisted it would be a disaster.

Hey, newspapers need to sell copies and news broadcasters need to get viewers. I get that. But once again a global sporting event was sensationalised and totally misrepresented by the press here in the UK.

I spent 2 weeks there, and just like South Africa in 2010, it was nothing short of wondrous. Think of the London Olympics in 2012 but with more vibrancy and colour and you’ll be about there.

So thank you Brasil for the most wonderful World Cup. I came for the football, and left with a new love for a country as a whole. Roll on Russia in 2018 when there will no doubt be press suggesting that it will be dangerous with serious potential unrest……………
